Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) is a method in which electrical impulses cause muscles to contract. Studies on body muscles show that EMS can increase muscle strength and cross-sectional area (Porcari et al., 2002; Kemmler et al., 2010). Applied to facial muscles, this suggests that EMS could train facial muscles and define contours. The repeated contractions also promote blood circulation, which improves the skin's nutrient supply and can contribute to a fresher complexion. Activation of fibroblasts is also theoretically possible, which could stimulate collagen production and support skin elasticity. Since no clinical studies on the human face currently exist, these effects are based on physiological principles and results from studies on the body.
